Think this is a painting? Look again – it’s actually a collage made up of lots of small paintings by the very talented artists who attend the Brushstrokes art class run by the charity Success After Stroke. If you would like to be the proud owner of this piece, it will be up for grabs at an exhibition held in the beautifully and sympathetically renovated church of St. Peter’s, now renamed Sudbury Arts Centre, from Sat 9th to 16th March, 10 – 4pm. It will be amongst many other works of art for sale by over 100 artists (including me!).

Success After Stroke is a Suffolk based charity which provides health and wellbeing support to stroke survivors and their families. Through a team of professionally qualified therapists and dedicated volunteers they aim to help its members regain their confidence and rebuild their lives. There are a range of support networks such as group meetings, speech and language therapies, physiotherapy, social outings, guest speakers, music therapy, art and pottery classes, all held or arranged via the Stevenson Centre, Great Cornard, Sudbury.

I’ve been volunteering at the art class for 18 months. The work they do just blows me away – every week, they produce incredible art of such a high standard. It’s so exciting to see their hard work come together and framed up for this exhibition. All commission of sales will go back into the charity to run the activities mentioned above and ensure that they continue.

This is the first time I have ever volunteered.  I have found that the ripple effect of being part of something bigger than myself has been quite incredible. Not only has it impacted positively on the attendees but it has had a huge influence on my well-being and my own art business. It has shown me the importance of strengthening communities and bringing people together. In fact, it gave me the idea for running my own creative coffee mornings (for more info about these see my last blog post Coffee Morning Magic) and now my creative connections are spreading even wider!

Do come along and support this exhibiton. It’s free entry with coffee and cake available at the centre. There will be a huge variety of work including paintings, collage, sculpture, pottery, cards and crafts. I will be there all day on Thursday 14th, demonstrating my collage art. It would lovely if you came to say hello! For more info visit:
